1. Draw a plan

The first thing to do before you start designing a shelf is to take all the measures of its future location to put them on a plan. In order to understand the volumes, take into account the height, width and depth of the furniture. But do not forget to anticipate the spaces between the boards to determine the ideal thickness. Anyway, we advise you to start with the design of a simple shelf, that is to say composed only of 2 or 3 boards.

2. The right material

Gather all the material necessary for the realization of a shelf. Rest assured, you don't need much:

  • Wooden planks (see paragraph 3),
  • a cutting saw, a pencil and a square (if you cut the boards yourself)
  • a screwdriver drill,
  • locks,
  • screws,
  • a screwdriver,
  • one meter,
  • sandpaper and a wedge,
  • glue and wood pulp.

3. Suitable wood

To make your shelf strong and durable, bet on quality wood! For the sake of savings, you can opt for pine, plywood or MDF. These woods are inexpensive, resistant and easy to handle. In all cases, prefer planks with a minimum thickness of 2.5 cm that can easily support weight.

4. Preparation

If you are a beginner handyman, we can only recommend that you cut the wood in a DIY store. If you are not afraid of this step, cut the planks according to the measures defined beforehand. To do this, draw marks using a wooden pencil and your square. All you have to do is cut the boards with a saw.
The handyman's tip: In order to solidify and embellish the edges, you can sand the corners of all the boards using abrasive paper and a sanding block. In this way, your shelf will only be reinforced!

5. The assembly

Begin the assembly so as to form a first angle. In other words, you are going to attach a side board to a horizontal board. Mark the drilling marks and drill holes 4 mm in diameter. Replace the boards perpendicularly and screw them. You can solidify the assembly using wood glue. Repeat the operation and screw the other side board to form a U. Continue with the intermediate boards before finishing with the last board of the frame. Attention, it's time to adjust the position of the boards if the last one does not fit properly with the others. If this is the case, all you have to do is plan the edge of the shelving.

6. Finishes

It's the long-awaited moment: that of finishing! If you feel like it, you can change shape and make a house-shaped shelf or add a bottom board.

To hide the holes, you can use wood pulp. Once the surface is flat, sand the wooden planks to remove irregularities and excess wood pulp. You can then varnish the wood, paint it or customize it using masking tape. All you have to do is find a place for your shelf by fixing it to the wall using fixing brackets.
